How to Buy a Dobermann Dog In India

Dobermann Dog

Physical characteristics of the Dobermann

The Dobermann is a medium-sized dog, robust and muscular, with elegant lines and a noble and proud bearing. The head is elongated and blunt wedge-shaped. The skull-face lines are parallel, the stop is light, the muzzle deep and wide. The eyes are medium sized and oval in shape. The ears, usually cropped, are set high and carried erect (in subjects whose ears are not cropped, these fall on the sides of the head with the edges well glued to the cheeks). The back is short and strong. The limbs are perfectly straight and upright. The tail is shortened to the second vertebra.

Doberman breed dog

Hair: short, very adherent and smooth.
Color: black and tan or brown and tan, depending on the variety. Blue is no longer high because this variety carried genetic defects.
Height: 68 to 72 cm for the male and 63 to 68 cm for the female
Weight: 40 to 45 kg for the male and 32 to 35 kg for the female

Origins and history

The breed was born between 1850 and 1870 in Apolda, Thuringia, thanks to a tax collector, Frédéric Louis Dobermann, who wanted a defense dog completely different from those that existed before. Then, his work was continued by other breeders, who introduced other breeds on the identity of which there is controversy: we speak of Pinschers, Weimaraners, Rottweilers and perhaps some Terriers. The contribution of the Berger de Beauce was probably very important since we can still clearly notice its imprint in the physical appearance of the Dobermann .

Character and Abilities

Affectionate:
Very nice, gentle, and tender, this dog is very attached to his social group. Despite his dissuasive appearance and his bad (and false) reputation as a dangerous dog, he is actually adorable and very affectionate.

Player:
This large Pinscher loves to play, especially because he enjoys spending time with members of his social group, young and old. The game is also a very good way to obtain good educational results with this dog.

Calm:
Although he knows how to be calm, this dog is endowed with a very beautiful energy that should be channeled from an early age to promote his integration into his adoptive family.

Intelligent:
This dog is particularly clever, he can adapt to many lifestyles.

Moreover, although he sometimes has a strong character, he quickly understands what is expected of him and complies with pleasure if the methods employed are respectful.

It is also often used by the police, security services, or even by the army thanks to its many qualities.

Hunter:
In many dogs, the predation instinct is always more or less present. At home, it is indeed but can easily be filed and controlled.

Fearful/suspicious of strangers:
He keeps a natural reserve vis-à-vis strangers, this is typical of defense dogs. On the other hand, a balanced subject will never be aggressive without reason. In this, it is important to properly socialize this dog.

Only unselected subjects from hazardous matings can be nervous and sometimes bite. It is therefore fundamental to buy a puppy from a good breeder who selects both the beauty and the character of the dogs.

Independent:
Very loyal to his master, this dog needs close contact with him to fully develop.

Behviour

Supports loneliness:
Very close to the members of his adoptive family, this sweet and sensitive dog does not support being excluded or isolated. He needs regular interactions with his humans.

Easy to train / obedient:
This dog can be easy to train but its great sensitivity requires patience and gentleness to achieve the desired results. He can also be adolescent and teasing for a while, especially since his intelligence allows him to know how to drive his master crazy!

It is essential to begin the education and socialization of the Dobermann puppy as soon as he arrives at home to prevent him from picking up bad habits.

It is advisable to use play and positive reinforcement during the sessions. Brutality could completely destroy this extremely sensitive dog.

Barking:
This guard dog easily gives the alert if it considers that an outside element is dangerous for its family. On the other hand, his mere presence is usually enough for him not to need to bark excessively.

Runaway:
Although he is very protective of his family, if he is not sufficiently spent or stimulated, this very active dog can, in the most extreme cases, take to their heels to let off steam. energy.

Destroyer:
Since this dog does not tolerate loneliness very well, he can actually, out of frustration, anxiety or boredom, attack certain objects in the house to pass the time and externalize his discomfort.

Greedy / Gluttonous:
Treats can be a great help in education. However, this large dog is not voracious and is generally satisfied with little. Some subjects can even be delicate and selective.

Watchdog:
This large Pinscher is a confident dog, very loyal and fearless. In this, he is an exceptional defense dog who could lay down his life to save that of his masters.

Always attentive, courageous and extremely vigilant, he lets nothing pass and is particularly wary of strangers. It is also a bit of the “cliché” of the guard dog in films where the Dobermann is generally used for scenes highlighting guarding.

However, he is never aggressive without reason. He must be sufficiently balanced and socialized not to adopt inappropriate behavior.

First dog:
Very affectionate and faithful, this large dog blends naturally into the family that adopts him. However, it also requires an education that is both firm and gentle, which requires some experience.

Living conditions

Dobermann in an apartment:
Although he knows how to be calm, this dog is not made to live in an apartment. He can live indoors but it is preferable that he has at least access to a garden to let off steam in addition to daily walks.

Attention, despite its robustness, this dog fears cold and humidity, it should not live exclusively outdoors.

Need for exercise/sport: Sporty
and dynamic, he, therefore, needs active owners to offer him various physically stimulating activities (can-cross, long walks, cani-mountain biking, etc.).

Travel / Ease of transport:
On the one hand, its large size does not facilitate travel, especially by public transport; on the other hand, his bad reputation as a “dangerous” dog does not help his acceptance in the different vacation spots either.

Grooming and maintenance

This dog with a short coat does not require grooming. His coat simply needs weekly brushing to maintain its beauty and shine.

His ears also need regular maintenance, especially since they are no longer cropped and hang down along his cheeks.

Hair loss:
The Dobermann (or rather its masters) is lucky to lose very little hair. The molts are also very light, in particular, due to the fact that he has no undercoat.

Food

This large dog is not difficult to feed, however, its growth being long and therefore potentially delicate, it is imperative to offer a diet adapted to the Doberman puppy.

Industrial rations (kibbles) may be perfectly suitable for this active dog, but they must be of high quality to meet the needs of this dog who exerts himself enormously and who therefore needs substantial energy intake.

Given its size, two meals a day are recommended (a light one in the morning and a larger one in the evening). These meals should be taken quietly to avoid stomach upset often seen in dynamic breeds.

Health

Resistant / robust:
This is a dog that enjoys solid overall health. It is robust and resistant as long as the temperatures are not extreme.

Withstands heat:
Extreme heat is often bad for most dogs, the Dobermann is one of them. A cool corner and plenty of water are necessary when it is too hot.

Withstands cold:
It suffers a lot from cold and humidity due to the lack of an undercoat. He should not stay outside when the weather conditions are not optimal.

Tendency to put on weight:
It is only if he is not sufficiently spent in line with his needs that this active dog can be led to put on weight. You have to be very careful because a dog of this size should not be affected by obesity.

Common illnesses:

  • Dilated cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease)

  • Von Willebrand disease (blood clotting problem)

  • Panosteitis (abnormality of bone cells called osteoblasts)

  • Wobbler syndrome (malformation of the cervical vertebrae)

  • Cox-femoral dysplasia

Average life expectancy: about 12 years
