Tips for Caring for Your Dog's Paws in Winter

With the cold winter months approaching, it's important to take care of your dog's paws. They can dry out and crack during the winter, which can lead to infection and other complications.

Winter weather can take a toll on dogs. They not only have to contend with cold weather but also snow and ice. However, there are ways to help your puppy stay warm and healthy during these times.

Here are some tips on how you can take care of your dog's paws in winter.

Keep your dog's nails trimmed.

-Keep them away from ice or icy water for too long.

-If his paws are extremely dry or cracked, bathe him every few weeks with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

-Add an extra layer of protection by applying petroleum jelly to their paws before going outside in cold temperatures or snow.

1) Keep them indoors: Dogs should always stay inside when it's cold outside. If they are outside, make sure they have access to a warm shelter and plenty of water.

2) Be extra cautious on ice: It is best to avoid walking your dog on ice if at all possible. Instead, roll them on pavement or grass that's less slippery.

3) Give them a sweater: Dogs will appreciate anything that keeps them warm so get them a sweater!

4) Get their paws checked: If you notice any redness or swelling on your dog's paws, take him to the vet immediately!

Paws are the most sensitive part of a dog's body. It is also the most difficult to take care of them in winter.

Make sure your dog has access to a warm, dry place at all times.
Make sure your dog doesn't have to walk on snow or ice, if possible use a sled or other means of transportation.
If you have an outdoor dog, make sure their shelter has natural insulation such as straw or hay so they can stay warm and dry even in subzero temperatures

If your dog has any difficulty walking or is due to a cold, then you should immediately contact a dog clinic near you.

Testifykennel not only sells dogs but also has its own clinic, Our Practice offers general veterinary medical services and surgery. In our examination room, we work hard to ensure that you and your pet can enter and exit safely but we really would prefer that all dogs are restrained on a leash or in a carrier and all the cats should be kept in their carriers until in the examination room itself. This is both for your safety and theirs.
